Curriculum Information for the Autumn Term

Curriculum Information for the Autumn Term

Dear Parents,

To keep you informed, the work the children will be covering this term is set out below.

Religious Education We are studying ‘Loving’. This involves looking at unconditional love such as that shown in the Prodigal Son. We will go on to look at the vocation of the priest hood. Our final topic for the term is Expectations and involves thinking about what we are looking forward to at Christmas and what we hope Jesus’ coming will mean for us.

Mathematics will be taught everyday. The topics will be taught in the blocks set out in the Primary Framework. We are focussing on mental and written calculations and working with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Literacy will also be taught each day. We are concentrating on recounts this half term and are about to begin a unit of work called ‘Biographical and autobiographical writing’, followed by newspaper reports. We will focus on the use of time connectives to link paragraphs. After half term we will study fiction writing.

Science Our first topic, which is a short one, involves investigating different electrical circuits. We will then study micro-organisms such as those that cause mould and useful ones such as yeast. After half term we will study Interdependence and Adaptation which involves looking at food chains and webs and how different plants and animals have adapted to survive in their habitat. We will be using the City Learning Centre at Notre Dame during the term to provide further opportunities to carry out first hand investigations. More details to follow.

Topic Our topic is ‘Children in World War 2’. We will be focussing on the experiences of evacuees, especially those from Sheffield. We will visit Eden Camp on Thursday 10th October  to support the work we are doing in class (details to follow).

Music Children are learning about cyclical patterns.

Art Our topic is People In Action. This involves sketching movement.

P.E. This term will be outdoor games on Thursday with Mrs Pearson and Gym/Dance on Fridays with Mrs Morton. Please make sure your child has the correct P.E. kit – shorts, tracksuit trousers and a white t-shirt and jumper. As part of Health and Safety Regulations children are asked not to wear jewellery during P.E. Girls who wear earrings should remove them or tape them.

ICT Each week we will go into the computer suite to develop our ICT skills. This term we are looking at Web design and then programming.

Education in Personal Relationships. The SEAL topic for this half term is Relationships. The children will be involved in a range of discussions, role play and activities.

Homework All children have a homework diary, which they should bring to school every day. Details of homework tasks are also displayed on the back of the classroom door and on the class news page on the school website. All children have a set day for guided reading homework and they can also expect tasks in other subjects over the week.

Finally, if you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to come and see us.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Pearson and Mrs Clements
