We are crowned Sheffield Partnership Sportshall Winners for the 3rd year in a row!

A fantastic display by  all the children who took part in the Sportshall Athletics Links Finals on Thursday afternoon at All Saints.

The team, made up of 9 boys and 9 girls (a couple of illnesses ) from the y4,y5 and y6 age groups, competed against 6 other schools including St Maries, Pipworth and Stocksbridge .

The team had already qualified as catholic cluster winners but this was a much greater challenge, with all the other cluster winners taking part.

In the running events Leo ran his heart out to finish 2nd in the one lap sprint. Luka cruised to a win in the 2 lap sprint and in a blanket  finish Sam came fourth in the 1 lap Hurdles. This was followed by a great performance by Luka in the 2 lap hurdles, with a creditable 2nd place. Louis M and Little James P put up a mighty effort in the 6 lap relay to claim another 1st place. The three relays followed and Sam, Louis M,  Louis G, Leo,  Jack, Seb and Jem gave it their all and gain vital points towards our grand total. In the field events some top performances by the girls in the standing long jump, seated throw and target throw  and particularly the speedbounce ensured St Wilfrids were near the top of the leaderboard.

All change at half time and the boys were now doing the field events and the girls the running races.

Cheered on by quite a few parents, the girls excelled themselves in the track events. In her first ever competitive race (against children much older and taller) Lucy showed real determination to gain a couple of vital points. Tatiana,  gave it her all and squeezed into fourth place in the 2 lap sprint. Juliet, stumbled at the start of her 1 lap hurdles,(she later told me she had her slippy trainers on !) but still earned the team another vital point.Zena ( our Cross Country Champion ) stepped up next and cantered to an easy win in the  2 lap hurdles, and Maggie and Zenawere involoved in a photo finish in the 6 lap relay.  Rebecca,Annie, Juliet, Tatiana, Katie (this girl knows how to start!!) Lucy, Aine and Maggie gained precious points in the relays. The boys made an almighty effort in the field events with impressive performances by Luka in the long jump and  Leo in the Speed bounce.

The final event saw Maggie , Zena, Leo and Louis M win the mixed sprint  relay with an impressive performance from all four children.

The children from all  7 schools were asked to come together to hear the results announced in reverse order. When it was announced that our main rivals ,Pipworth, were third the children realised that it was between St Wilfrids and Gleadless for first place.

After a nail biting wait it was declared that  Gleadless had  139 points with St Wilfrids winning with a total of 140 points.Only one point separating the top two !!

We should be very proud of the children’s achievement,  especially considering that some of them were only 8 years old competing against 11 year olds!!

St Wilfrids will now progress to the Sheffield City Finals to be held next Wednesday 14th January at Hillsborough Leisure Centre.

Many thanks to all the parents who assisted on the day or offered their considerable vocal support!Capture sports
