Well done to all the children who took part in the Sainsburys School Games Regional Finals in Athletics and Basketball which took place on Thursday 13th March . A fantastic day began with guest speakers including the Lady Mayoress, dancers, a football juggler and a procession around the indoor track.
The top 2 schools in Sheffield plus the top 2 from Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster competed in Hotshots Basketball and Sportshall Athletics which involves Olympic style relay running events and field events such as triple jump,long jump and high jump.
In the Hotshots Basketball the y3/4’s played the other four schools in Group A . 4 minutes each way , two boys and two girls on the court at the same time. Cheered on by the other children and parents they stormed to two wins , a draw and a narrow defeat and a place in the semi final. In a tight game , when either team could have won , they were edged out by 10 points to two . Although they were down they were certainly not out and in the match for bronze ran out easy winners. !!
In the main event of the day the y5/6’s took part in the South Yorkshire Sportshall Championships.
Cheered on by myself , Mr Scott and many parents every one of the thirty children gave their all.
The Obstacle relay for the girls was the first race of the day and the girls did not disappoint , running out easy winners. The boys almost matched them, narrowly missing out on first place by a whisker.
The sprint relays were next and believe me our girls know how to run, winning their race by several metres. It’s fair to say the boys have been outshone in recent athletic events and the pressure was on them to perform .They need not have worried as the boys also stormed to victory , again winning by a comfortable margin. This level of performance was maintained throughout the next couple of races, again running out comfortable winners. Let us not forget that this was against the top two schools from Rotherham,Doncaster and Barnsley !
With some fantastic performances in the Chest Push, Triple Jump, Long Jump, Speed Bounce,Vertical Jump and Javelin Throw the children had really excelled themselves. The final event of the day was the 4 x 1 sprint relay. The quartet of girls ran their hearts out and with slick baton changing were again first across the line. The boys race was a very tight race and they showed tremendous determination narrowly gaining second place in a very strong line up.
After what seemed like an eternity the results were announced in reverse order. As soon as the organisers declared St Wilfrids the winners the children celebrated wildly ( as did the parents and myself!)
For the first time ever St Wilfrids had been crowned South Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics Champions. A massive well done to each and every child who represented us in this brilliant event . They not only performed amazingly but were a real credit to the school.
A big thanks also to all the parents who came along and offered their considerable support on the day.
