Sheffield Futsal Cup 23/01/12 Spring Academy

Well done to the y4/5 Futsal football team for their performance in the annual Futsal Football Sheffield Final held at Spring Academy on Monday 23rd January.

For some of the boys (and girl) this was the first time they had played in a competitive football event for the school. However it didn’t show!

Despite absolutely freezing conditions the team played some excellent football showing great skill and teamwork . The first match was against Bankwood Primary and with Joe on form at the front and Fiona strong in defence the team came out 5-0 winners ! With their confidence sky high the children were really looking forward to their next match against Pipworth Primary and with superb midfield play from Ben and Sam and clinical finishing from Joe they won 7-1. The team needed to win or draw their final game to progress to the final .Great teamwork from Sol and  Hugo and excellent goalkeeping from Conor secured a comfortable 4-0 win and a place in the final.

After conceding an early goal to the other finalists Thorpe the team tried their upmost to get back on level terms. Following a hard tackle inside the area we were awarded a penalty and a chance to level the scores. Despite a valiant attempt by Joe the goalkeeper made a tremendous save and with time running out the opposing team ran out worthy winners.

St Wilfrids were not too despondent when they discovered that both finalists would be competing in the regional Futsal finals at Ponds Forge later in the year.

Sportshall Athletics Success 09/01/12

A massive well done to all the children who recently took part in the Sportshall Athletics Links finals at All Saints Goal centre on the first day back after the Christmas break.  The team was made up of 10 boys and 10 girls mostly from the y5 and y6 age groups with the addition of a couple of exceptionally talented y4 girls. They competed against 5 other schools from across the city who had previously qualified, along with ourselves for the final.

The event consists of various running events including sprints, hurdles and relays combined with field events such as long jump, speed jump and ball throw

From the outset it was obvious that St Wilfrids were in no mood to take things easy and the boys rattled off wins in the 60m and 120m  sprints. An all out effort in the 6 lap relay followed by a really close win in the 4×4 relay and it was 4 wins out of 4!  Good performances in the hurdles and obstacle race meant the boys had put us up with the leaders.  In the field events some top performances by the girls in the standing long jump, seated throw and target throw ensured St Wilfrids were near the top of the leaderboard.

Half time and the boys were now doing the field events and the girls the running races.

Cheered on by Mrs Jarrett, Mr Brelsford and quite a few parents, the girls excelled themselves in all the sprints, winning 4 out of 5 and coming 2nd in the other 2. The boys made an almighty effort in the field events with impressive performances in the long jump, ball throwing and speed bounce .

The final event was the mixed relay ….2 boys and 2 girls 1 lap sprint………. the children gave it their all and managed 2nd place.

All the children from the 6 schools were asked to come together and the results were announced in reverse order. After a nail biting wait Carterknowle were declared 2nd place meaning St Wilfrids were crowned Links SSP Sportshall Winners 2012!

Maths

During Maths this week we are covering shape and pattern making. We have a particular focus on 3D shapes and their properties. If you get the chance please encourage your child to look around the home and find examples of 3D shapes. You could also do a shape hunt while you are out and about. Any discussion will support your child and their learning. Many thanks.
