Y5/6 Champs in Sportshall Links Event

A massive well done to all the children who took part in the Sportshall Athletics Links event on Wednesday at All Saints Sports Centre.

The team was made up of 10 boys and 10 girls  from the y5 and y6 age groups .They competed against 5 other schools from across the city .

The event consists of various running events including sprints, hurdles and relays combined with field events such as long jump, speed jump and ball throw

From the outset it was obvious that St Wilfrids were in no mood to take things easy .The boys rattled off wins in the 1 lap (James P)and 2 lap sprints (Francis). An all out effort by Dubby in the 1 lap hurdles , a win for PJ in the  2 lap hurdles and a fantastic performance from Chinonso and Benji in the 6 lap relay put us up with the leaders. A really close win in the 4×1 relay  ( Nick , Chinonso, Dubby and PJ ) was followed by a great second in the 4 x 1 hurdle relay(Benji,Jacob, Ethan and Isaac)The final 4 x 1 obstacle race Nick , Jacob,  Ethan , Isaac )resulted in yet another win !!!

In the field events  top performances by the girls in the standing long jump(Ellie)  and target throw (Eleanor P and Olivia F) ensured St Wilfrids were near the top of the leaderboard.

Half time and the boys were now doing the field events and the girls the running races.

Cheered on by Mr Brelsford and quite a few parents, the girls excelled themselves in all the sprints,winning 6 out of 7  and coming 2nd in the other 1!! Daisy (1 lap sprint) Tess ( 2 lap sprint ) Rebecca and Tess ( 6 lap relay) Olivia , Ellie, Hannah and Rachel (4 x 1 relay) and Alice Hannah Charlotte and Eleanor ( 4 x 1 Obstacle relay) all winning their particular race.

The boys made an almighty effort in the field events with impressive performances in the long jump, ball throwing and speed bounce .

The final event was the mixed relay ….2 boys and 2 girls 1 lap sprint………. the children gave it their all and managed a dead heat 1st place!

All the children from the 6 schools were asked to come together and the results were announced in reverse order. After a nail biting wait St Marie’s were declared 2nd place meaning St Wilfrids were crowned Links  Sportshall Winners 2016!
